Note: There is an actual Pancake Day in the UK. See more about it and find dates at Wikipedia. (However, this should not be confused with IHOP's Pancake Day, which is a commercial promotion for the US restaurant chain and falls on a different date... but does include free pancakes. :)

(You could use a stack of bean bags or something similar to make this into an activity. Recite the poem, letting one child pick a pancake off the top, and another try to pull one out of the middle. Do it a couple times, so everyone gets a chance. This will help illustrate to young children why this poem is so funny.)

Pancake Rhyme

(make the actions indicated)

Mix a pancake, stir a pancake

Pop it in a pan

Fry a pancake, toss a pancake

Catch it if you can!

Make a Pancake

Make a pancake, pat, pat, pat

(pat hands together)

Do not make it fat, fat, fat

(stretch hands wide)

You must make it flat, flat, flat

(pat and press hands together)

Make a pancake just like that!

Five Fluffy Pancakes

Five fluffy pancakes frying in a pan,

The pan got hot and one went BAM!

Four fluffy pancakes...

Three fluffy pancakes…

Two fluffy pancakes…

One fluffy pancakes…

No fluffy pancakes frying in a pan,

The pan got hot and it went BAM!

"I'm a little Pancake"

(Tune: I'm a Little Tea Pot)

I'm a little Pancake, round and brown.

Here is my upside,

Here is my down.

When I am ready, take a bite,

Flip me over,

I’m a lovely sight.

Five Crispy Pancakes

Five crispy pancakes in a frying pan,

Flip them and toss them and catch them if you can.

Along came (choose a child),

For a pancake one day

Sprinkled it with sugar and took it away.

Four crispy pancakes...

Three crispy pancakes…

Two crispy pancakes…

One crispy pancakes…

Five Hot Pancakes

Five hot pancakes in a baker’s shop,

Big and round with butter on the top.

I came in with a dollar one day,

Bought a pancake and took it away.

Four hot pancakes …

Three hot pancakes …

Two hot pancakes …

One hot pancakes …

Pancake Song

(Tune: Skip to My Lou)

Pop a little pancake into a pan,

Pop a little pancake into a pan,

Pop a little pancake into a pan,

I’ll have one for my tea.

Shake in the sugar with a shake shake shake,

Shake in the sugar with a shake shake shake,

Shake in the sugar with a shake shake shake,

I’ll have one for my tea.

Squeeze in the lemon with a squeeze squeeze squeeze,

Squeeze in the lemon with a squeeze squeeze squeeze,

Squeeze in the lemon with a squeeze squeeze squeeze,

I’ll have one for my tea.

Roll it all around with a rolly rolly roll,

Roll it all around with a rolly rolly roll,

Roll it all around with a rolly rolly roll,

I’ll have one for my tea.

Eat it all up with a yum yum yum,

Eat it all up with a yum yum yum,

Eat it all up with a yum yum yum,

I’ll have one for my tea.

Pancake Flipper

Make a 'frying pan' by glueing a paint stick onto the bottom of a paper plate. Punch a hole and tie a string to the front of the plate (or just tape it). Glue the other end of the string in between two brown circles to make the pancake. Let kids decorate their pancake flipper as desired, and practice flipping and catching the pancake!

Breakfast Plate

Cut strips of brown paper (bacon), white ovals and smaller yellow circles (eggs), and tan circles (pancakes). Let kids glue these onto a paper plate to make their own perfect breakfast!
