Activities:
Penguin Song (Carole Peterson; Stinky Cake, #18)
(It helps to go through the movements for the kids first, since they go pretty fast in the song: "Penguins, Attention!": Salute; "Right Arm, Left Arm": Swing arm sideways away from body and back down without bending elbow; "Right Foot, Left Foot": Swing leg forward away from body without pointing your toes - keep your foot parallel to the ground so it looks like a penguin's.)
All the Little Penguins
(Tune: "Wheels on the Bus")
All the little penguins go flap, flap, flap, / flap, flap, flap, / flap, flap, flap
All the little penguins go flap, flap, flap,
All around the ice!
...Waddle, waddle, waddle...
...Swim, swim, swim...
Five Little Penguins
5 little penguins, happy as could be, (Hold up 5 fingers; bounce around)
Standing on a rock, looking out at sea. (Shade eyes, look around)
Crash went the waves, oh what a din! (Move hands like waves)
Said the 1st little penguin, "Shall we all jump in?" (Hold up 1 finger at a time)
Said the 2nd little penguin, "The water's like ice."
Said the 3rd little penguin, "That's not so nice."
Said the 4th little penguin, "Let's bask in the sun."
Said the 5th little penguin, "Hey, that's no fun!"
So the 5 little penguins took a leap & dive, (Jump; make diving motion)
And splashed into the water, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. (Count on fingers)
Penguin Cheer
I like fishes. Yes I do. (Clap hands)
When I want fishes, here's what I do. (Point to self)
One, two, three...Splash! (Jump forward, arms over head)
If You're a Penguin, And You Know It
If you're a penguin and you know it, flap your wings
If you're a penguin and you know it, flap your wings
If you're a penguin and you know it and you really want to show it
If you're a penguin and you know it, flap your wings
Waddle your feet....
Swim, swim, swim...
Eat a fish, yum, yum ( rub your belly)
I’m A Little Penguin
(Tune: I'm A Little Teapot)
I'm a little penguin
Black and white,
Short and wobbly;
An adorable sight.
I can't fly at all
But I love to swim,
So, I'll waddle to the water
And dive right in.
I’m A Little Penguin
(Tune: I'm A Little Teapot)
I'm a little penguin
On the ice
I think the cold
Is very nice.
I can hop around,
First once, then twice,
I think the ice
Is very nice.
Waddling Penguins
(Tune: "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star")
Penguins, penguins having fun, (Waddling movements)
Waddling in the winter sun. (Encircle arms above head)
Waddling fast & waddling slow, (Suit actions to words)
Waddling to & waddling fro.
Penguins, penguins having fun,
Waddling in the winter sun.
10 Penguins
Ten little penguins dressed in black and white,
Playing in the Artic snow so bright.
It snowed and snowed and snowed all day,
And one little penguin waddled away.
Etc.
Six Little Penguins
Six little penguins off an iceberg did dive,
One bumped his beak, then there were five.
Five little penguins swam the ocean floor,
One saw a whale, then there were four.
Four little penguins spun around, whee-ee!
One spun off, then there were three!
Three little penguins, with nothing to do,
One went fishing, then there were two.
Two little penguins, having lots of fun,
One swam away, then there was one.
One little penguin, when the day was done,
Went home to sleep, then there were none.
Pippa's Penguin
By Susan M. Dailey
Use flannel penguins in blue, yellow, red, brown, purple orange, green, gray and black with white polka dots. Pause to let the kids fill in the penguin's color and encourage them to say "They're black and white" with you.
Pippa went with her Nana to the zoo. They saw elephants, lions and kangaroos. Pippa watched the peacocks and the monkeys. But her favorite animals were the penguins. She loved the way they waddled and swam and slid on their tummies.
On the way home, Nana said, “Pippa, would you like a penguin?”
“Yes, please,” said Pippa.
“I think I have some scrap material that I could use to make you one,” said Nana. When they got to Nana’s house, she got out a large scrap bag.
“How about a penguin made from this?” asked Nana. (put up blue penguin)
“Nana, that’s silly!” said Pippa. “Penguins aren’t... blue. They’re black and white.”
Nana dug deeper into the scrap bag. “Here’s your favorite color.” (put up yellow penguin)
“Oh, Nana, penguins aren’t... yellow. They’re black and white.”
Nana dug even deeper into the scrap bag. “You know this is just a pretend penguin. So how about a brightly colored one?” (put up red penguin)
“Penguins aren’t... red. They’re black and white.”
Nana dug into the very bottom of the scrap bag. “This might work,” said Nana.
“It would if you were making a monkey,” said Pippa, “But penguins aren’t... brown. They’re black and white.” (put up brown penguin)
Nana scratched her head, then said, “I think I have some more scrap material in a closet. She and Pippa headed there.
“Here’s the material left over from your favorite dress,” said Nana. (put up purple penguin)
“Nana, that’s silly!” said Pippa. “Penguins aren’t... purple. They’re black and white.”
Nana dug deeper into the closet. “I don’t suppose you’d want an... orange or... green penguin.” (put up orange and green penguins)
“Penguins aren’t orange or green. They’re black and white.”
Nana dug into the very bottom of the closet. “This might work,” said Nana. (put up gray penguin)
“It would if you were making an elephant. But penguins aren’t... gray.” Pippa paused. “Well, the ones I like aren’t. The ones I like are black and white.”
Nana smiled at Pippa. “I’ll keep looking. Surely I have some black and white material somewhere.”
The next Saturday Pippa came over to Nana’s house.
“Close your eyes. I have a surprise,” said Nana.
“Is it black and white?” asked Pippa.
“Yes,” said Nana.
Pippa felt something in her hands. She opened her eyes. (put up polka-dotted penguin)
“Oh, Nana, you’re silly!” said Pippa. “But I love you and I love my polka-dotted penguin.”
