Activities:

Rabbit in the Hat

Rabbit in the hat

Stay so still                    (crouch down low)

Won’t you come out?

Yes I will!                       (Jump up)

Silly Hat Song

(Tune: This Old Man)

On my head, I wear my hat.

It is such a silly hat

That my head will wiggle waggle to and fro

Where else can my silly hat go?

[Repeat using foot, elbow and knee.]

I Like My Hat

(From Carole Peterson; Stinky Cake CD)

I like my hat.

I like my hat.

I like my hat so I'll put it on my.... Knee.

(Ask kids if that is where a hat goes, then when they say 'no', tell them you'll sing it right and use a different body part until they are all giggling. Finally, tell them to yell out the right place to put a hat as you sing it one more time.)

Hats, Hats, Hats

A clown wears a funny hat that’s pointed at the top

Hands form point on head

A firefighter’s hat protects her as she makes a fire stop.

Circle head with hands

A baseball player needs his hat when sun gets in his eyes.

Indicate a visor over eyes

An astronaut needs a helmet when into space she flies.

Place imaginary helmet on head

A cowboy rides a bronco and wears a wide-brimmed hat.

Hands encircle head

But when the bronco bucks him off, his hat may end up flat.

Palms together to indicate flatness

Cats in Hats

(Make 5 tiny hats for fingers)

One little cat on a sunny day,

Put on his hat and went out to play.

Two little cats when it started getting dark,

Put on their hats and went to the park.

Three little cats when the sky was blue,

Put on their hats and went to the zoo.

Four little cats by the kitchen door,

Put on their hats and went to the store.

Five little cats on a sunny day,

Put on their hats and ran away!

Grandma's Glasses

Here are grandma's glasses.

Here is grandma's hat.

This is the way she folds her hands,

And lays them in her lap.

Here are grandpa's glasses.

Here is grandpa's hat.

This is the way he folds his arms,

Just like that!

Crafts:

Paper Plate Hat

Cut out the middle of a paper plate. Punch holes in the plate and a paper bowl. Attach the two pieces using brads or glue together. Decorate with markers, feathers, pom-poms, and stickers.

Striped Hats

Use NCLS Accucut "Hat Wrap Around Striped" to cut out hats. Let the children decorate them!
