Dress the Cowboy

(Make felt cutouts of the articles of clothing-glue his head, hands, and feet onto the red flannel underwear-and dress him with this rhyme)              

 A cowboy dresses himself with care.

 He starts with long, red ______(UNDERWEAR).

 Out in the desert, you don't want to get hurt, 

 So the cowboy wears a strong wool ______(SHIRT).

 Deserts and prairies are the cowboy's scenes;

 To protect his legs, he wears sturdy blue______(JEANS).

  The cowboy bent, and ran, and knelt.

 To keep his pants up, he wore a leather ______(BELT).

 The coyote howls, the old owl hoots.

 On his feet, he wears leather ______(BOOTS).

 It isn't yellow, so it's not a banana;

 Around his neck, he wears a soft ______(BANDANA).

 A cowboy is a cowboy, and that is that!

 On top of his head, he wore a ten-gallon ______(HAT).

 He's all dressed from head to feet,

 And now our cowboy can't be beat! 

 

Game:

Happy Trails Bingo

Make Bingo cards from cardstock or paper using markers to

divide an 8”square into 9 blocks. Using cut-out pictures, stamps

or clip art, find pictures representing the following: Cowboy hat,

chaps, boots, lariat, sheriff’s badge, horse shoe, horse, cow/

steer, campfire, different brands (Lazy M or Rocking A), cactus,

spurs, chuck wagon, saddle, bandana, rattlesnake, guitar, and

coyote. You’ll need 18 pictures to mix up on the cards so that no

two are alike. Give each child a card and 9 tokens, coins or

buttons. As you hold up a larger version of the pictures and say

the name, players will place a token over the picture on the

card. The first child to cover all nine pictures wins.

 

 

Crafts:

Cactus with Crunchy Paint

Copy and cut out cactus templates from cardstock. Let kids paint green crunchy paint on with sponges. To make crunchy paint, add lots of salt or sugar to regular tempera paint until you get the consistency you want.

Bandanas

Cut triangles from cheap cloth or muslin and let the kids decorate it with fabric paint or stamps. 

 

Western Vest

Cut neck and arm holes in brown paper bags and slit up the front to make a vest. Let kids decorate with markers, ribbons, and other craft materials.
