Activities:

There are lots of rhymes and songs that fit this theme, but here are a couple examples. Any 'Five little ___' or 'Ten little _____" type rhyme will work.

Five Brave Knights (Ronno; Castles, Knights, and Unicorns CD)

Five Days Old (Laurie Berkner; Rocketship Run CD)

Eight Days a Week (The Beatles)

Numbers Rhumba (The Wiggles; Yummy Yummy CD)

Hickory Dickory Dock

1, 2, Buckle My Shoe

This Old Man

Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed

Ten Little Fireflies

Ten little fireflies

(Hold up 10 fingers)

Fly around at night.

(Wiggle fingers around)

Ten little fireflies

Flashing little lights.

(Open and close hands)

Ten little fireflies

Look at me and wink.

(Wink one or both eyes)

Ten little fireflies

Blink! Blink! Blink!

(Open and close hands)

Five Red Apples

Five red apples hanging in a tree.

The juiciest apples you ever did see!

The wind came by and gave an angry frown,

And one little apple came tumbling down.

Four red apples, hanging in a tree …

This can easily be made into a flannel set using NCLS accucuts "Apple #1" and "Tree No Leaves". Ask kids to be the wind by waving their arms and blowing - pause at that line to let them be the wind, then continue by drawing a frown on your face and removing one apple from the board.

Five Little Kittens

Five little kittens standing in a row.

(hold up 5 fingers)

They nod their heads to the children so.

(bend fingers)

They run to the left, they run to the right,

(run fingers to the left and then to the right)

They stand up and stretch in the bright sunlight.

(stretch fingers out tall)

Along comes a dog who's in for some fun,

(hold up other fist)

MEOW! MEOW! MEOW!

See those kittens run!

Rooster Crows

One, two, three

Baby’s on my knee.

Rooster crows….

And away he goes!

Old Shoes, New Shoes

Old shoes, new shoes,

Who is wearing red shoes?

One, two, three, four,

Stomp them, stomp them on the floor!

Replace red with other colors

Last verse:

Old shoes, new shoes,

Everyone is wearing shoes!

One, two, three, four,

Let’s all stomp them on the floor!

One Potato, Two Potato

One potato, two potato,

Three potato, four.

Five potato, six potato,

Seven potato more.

Eight potato, nie potato,

Where is ten?

Oh no! We have to count all over again!

1...2...3...

One Two, Buckle My Shoe

One, two, buckle my shoe.

Three, four, shut the door.

Five, six, pickup sticks.

Seven, eight, lay them straight.

Nine, ten, let's do it again!

Johnny Hammers With One Hammer

Johnny hammers with one hammer, one hammer, one hammer.

{pound fist on floor}

Johnny hammers with one hammer, then he hammers with two!

{continue with other fist then feet then head}

Crafts:

Number Fish

Find and print a fish bowl template of your choice onto cardstock paper. Have children decorate the inside of the bowl (the part where the fish swim). Cut four or five fish per child, and put numbers on them before you give them out. Have children decorate their fish, and them glue them "in" the fish bowl!
