Bug hunt rhyme: Manual p. 111

Music: I’m Bringing Home A Baby Bumblebee (Wee Sing Animals CD #28) (1st verse only)

Music: Bumblebee (Buzz Buzz) by Laurie Berkner (Buzz Buzz CD #5)

Hermie the Worm

Hermie the worm got hungry one day,

He found a sweet apple and nibbled away.

He nibbled and tunneled

Until the day was done,

And then popped his head out

And said, “Isn’t this fun!”

(Show Hermie puppet then make him wiggle behind the apple prop. Make prop by painting a cardboard circle red and attaching a felt leaf. Cut a hole in the apple and attach a string to the cut out part and the main apple so Hermie can pop out without letting the kids see where beforehand)

Grasshopper

(Jump and then sit down)

There was a little grasshopper,

Who was always on the jump.

Because he never looked ahead,

He always got a bump.

Never Squash a Bug

(Tune: 'Row, Row, Row Your Boat

Never, never squash a bug,

they're Mother Nature's friend.

Catch one in a plastic jar,

then let it go again.

Catch Some Bugs

(Tune: 'Mary Had a Little Lamb')

Catch some bugs and look at them,

look at them, look at them.

Catch some bugs and look at them,

then please let them go.

Pretty Butterfly

(Tune: 'Up on the Housetop')

First comes the butterfly and lays an egg,

out comes a caterpillar with many legs.

Oh see the caterpillar spin and spin,

a little cocoon to sleep in.

Oh, oh, oh, look and see,

Oh, oh, oh, look and see.

Out of the cocoon my oh my,

Out comes a pretty butterfly.

Crafts:

Sugar paint grasshopper

Cut out the grasshopper pictures around the dotted line. Mix washable green paint with sugar until it has a thick consistency. Let kids dab the paint on the picture with sponges. It will be crunchy and rough when it dries.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Coloring page - You can just color it, or let the kids cut out the pieces and re-tell the story.

Accordion Caterpillars

Cut construction paper into strips about 2 inches wide and 10 inches long. Decorate strips. Fold like accordion. Glue wiggly eyes on front fold (or draw a face) and insert short pipe cleaners for antennae. When you press and release the folded strip, the caterpillar "crawls".
